Intervention and health services in ADHD

As part of the ESCAlife research network and the INTEGATE-ADHD study, the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (CAPPP) at Würzburg University Hospital is investigating the effectiveness of treatment, the quality of care, and the frequency of occurrence of ADHD in children and adolescents in Germany. This includes the search for biomarkers, for example to predict the course of the disease and to select individually tailored therapy options.

ESCAlife

Our research network ESCAlife (Evidence-based Stepped Care of ADHD across the lifespan) includes four multi-center trials on psychotherapy of ADHD from kindergarten to adulthood (BMBF funding program “Research Network on Mental Diseases”). ESCAlife is managed by the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim. The CAPPP Würzburg is the leading center of the controlled psychotherapy study for the treatment of ADHD in adolescents (ESCAadol) and is involved as a study center in trials on the treatment of ADHD in kindergarten and school age. Cross-sectional projects of ESCAlife serve to identify biomarkers that predict outcome. The ESCAlife research program will improve ADHD treatment algorithms through adaptive strategies that take into account age, gender, symptom severity, co-morbidity and treatment response. Our trials are carried out in routine outpatient clinical care in order to enable highly generalizable study results. These will be available from 2021.

INTEGATE-ADHD-Study

In addition to evidence-based treatment strategies, improving the quality of care requires reliable knowledge of the prevalence of ADHD and the status of care in Germany. This is investigated by the CAPPP in cooperation with DAK-Gesundheit, the Robert Koch Institute, the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, the Economic Research Institute WiFor and the Institute for Clinical Epidemiology and Biometry of the University of Würzburg in the network "ADHD in Germany - INTEGATE-ADHD" (funded by the innovation fund of the federal committee G-BA). The CAPPP is leading a project to compare the prevalence estimates of ADHD using registry entries, surveys and guideline-based clinical assessment. Other projects of INTEGRATE-ADHD are investigating the availability and use of care services for ADHD and health economics. INTEGRATE-ADHD will start in 2021.

KJPPP and ADHD research

With ESCAlife and INTEGRATE-ADHD, our research tradition on ADHD is continued, which includes the Clinical Research Group 125 from 2004 to 2009 (sponsored by the DFG) and the research network ADHDnet in the BMBF funding program "Research Networks on Psychotherapy" from 2006 to 2013.
