The Importance of Cardiac Imaging
Cardiac imaging plays a central role in the research, diagnostics, and therapy of heart diseases. Our work goes far beyond simply "photographing" the heart: modern methods allow us to gain insights into microstructure, function, and metabolism down to the molecular level.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
This progress is only possible through close interdisciplinary collaboration between physics, computer science, engineering, biomedicine, and clinical medicine. This collaboration allows us to understand heart diseases not only in an organ-centric way but also by considering interactions with other organs, driving forward patient-centered, individualized medicine.
Our Tradition in Würzburg
Würzburg has a long tradition in medical imaging: In 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays here, laying the foundation for the development of modern imaging. Furthermore, Axel Haase, a co-inventor of fast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – which enabled modern cardiac MR imaging – conducted his research at the local Institute of Physics. Our department is deeply rooted in this tradition.
Technological Infrastructure
To meet these high scientific standards, we are equipped with cutting-edge technology:
- 7 Tesla MRI: Our 7 Tesla magnetic resonance tomograph allows for examinations at field strengths well above standard clinical levels, facilitating advanced scientific research.
- Experimental Imaging: For basic biomedical research, we utilize specialized equipment, including an additional 7 Tesla MRI, a positron emission tomograph (PET), and a SPECT/CT scanner for mapping metabolic processes.
