In this course, we will provide practical tips for RNA isolation from various materials (such as DRG, nerves, and fixed tissues), discuss RNA quality criteria, compare reverse priming strategies, test RNA sample comparability, and demonstrate how to evaluate RNA-Seq raw data prior to computational analysis.
Hands-On Classes 2026
On demand: Behavioural screen for molecular players in pain resolution
Responsible lecturer
Prof. R. Kittel, Dr. M. Selcho
Location
Institute of Biology, Leipzig University, Leipzig
Description
Participants will perform behavioural experiments in Drosophila to analyse molecular components involved in pain resolution, and visit the research facilities at the Institute of Biology at Leipzig University.
Additional Info: Drosophila experiments, Institute Tour. Travel costs will be covered by the KFO 5001, after discussion with Ms. Gewiß (resolvepain@ukw.de)

The hands-on session will be in two parts, a short lecture about the basics of machine learning, and a hands-on session, where participants dive through pre-written simple codes covering the following aspects:
- Common machine learning models used in clinical studies
- Deep learning models
- Large language models
Basic knowledge of python is all that is needed.
Participants are highly encouraged to bring their laptops.

The students will become familiar with a genome browser and learn how to extract sequence information. This will help them to understand transcript complexity including alternative splicing, polyadenylation and transcription initiation. This information is important to analyze sequence data, measure gene expression and design cloning experiments.

The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) can be imaged in various ways using MRI techniques. This course provides an overview of current in vivo MRI techniques, exploring their potential and limitations. The course is designed to give scientists who are already familiar with DRG imaging a deeper understanding of the method. It is also intended to demonstrate to scientists with no prior experience of the method how it can be applied to their research.
